You´re fired !!!
Database creation in football is mostly used for analyzing players’ performance; like I said before, players are not the only ones involved in the game; one of the most important factors for good performance of clubs are (of course) their manager. Recently we have seen decisions made rashly when it comes to the Manager performance. Regarding players, we have information about them, behind sports result, to properly evaluate their performance. A manager who spends a considerable amount on transfers/wages and gets a certain number of points per season isn’t necessarily better than a Manager get same number of points but whit less resources. One case of poor management is undoubtedly Chelsea F.C. as Roman Abramovich fired seven coaches in eight years (Costing about 100 million Euros) plus hired players requested by each technician. This represents high resource being spent for obtaining results. So for a good Manager, evaluation and performance of clubs is essential defined by the “performance parameter” .
1. Sports Results and Funds Invested
Sports results aren’t a reflection of the Manager's capacity; the combination of funds one possesses plus funds invested in players; coaches or training conditions, allow us to make a better evaluation of the manager. A Manager who gets better sport results with fewer resources is necessarily better than Manager who gets the same results with more resources. Analyzing 3 English Clubs regarding their transfers in season 2011/2012 (Figure 1) we see Manchester City had a 38.8 M euro difference between the amount spent on transfers and managed; 54.46 M negative for Chelsea (Vilas Boas financial compensation not included), Manchester Utd already had 46.795 M negative difference. Sport results: Manchester City won the championship with 89 points tied with Manchester Utd, Chelsea made 64 points and won the Champions League and FA Cup.
2. Increase wealth
The ability to increase wealth through the value of players is one of many variables used to determine Manager Performance. Determining the number of and young player’s quality in the first team is another way to evaluate the manager. Considering players formed in Manchester City: Eirik Johansen, Micah Richards, Reece Wabara, Tom Smith; Karim Rekik; Denis Suarez, Chris Chantler; Harry Bunn. for Chelsea we have: Jamal Blackman, Sam Hutchinson, Ryan Bertrand, Nathaniel Chalobah, Josh McEachran and for Manchester Utd have: Ben Amos, Zeki Fryers, Tom Thorpe, Michael Keane; Marnick Vermijl; Jonny Evans, Tom Cleverley, Paul Pogba; Davide Petrucci, Ryan Tunnicliffe, Oliver Norwood, Ravel Morrison, Jesse Lingard, Danny Welbeck, Federico Macheda, William Keane.
3. Winter transfer window; Injuries and other context variables
A high number of injuries per season may indicate a poor physical preparation. This could lead to an overhaul in the squad in winter market. Others context variables may useful to determinate the Manager performance, like stance when dealing with the press, opponent managers, capacity to motivate people around him, etc.
If we compare all the data about these 3 clubs we may conclude:
· Chelsea spent more money than other clubs and made a lower number of point in championship;
· Man.utd is the second clubs which spent more money and even though it has the same points Man.City has, City is the club that spent the least money of the two.
· Man.utd is the club that included more young player in the squad.
· Chelsea won 2 competitions; Man.City 1 and Man. Utd 0.
So attending to all this we can say that Man.utd is the club with worst performance last season, of the three; they are the second club which spent more money and didn´t win any title; however we must consider they made the same number of points in championship that Man.City made and they are the club that includes the most young players in the squad. We must also take into account than Manager performance is not about only one season. We must definitely consider previous seasons to evaluate managers’ performance. Chelsea F.C is the club with best performance since they are the club that spent the most money but also the clubs that won the most titles. To compare the performance in the Champion’s League we must take into account the other finalist (Bayern Muchen).In second place Manchester City spent less money and won one competition and in last position Manchester utd, with more money spent and no titles.
